Stillness Meditation Therapy

What is Stillness Meditation Therapy

Stillness Meditation Therapy (SMT) is the authentic meditation originated by Dr Ainslie Meares to enable his patients to relieve anxiety and pain. Ultimately, Dr Meares initiated the use of meditation for wider health benefits. SMT is an effortless experience where people return to a natural state of being without any trying; there is no music, or chanting, no visualisation or breath techniques; there is no focussing or observing anything at all. In SMT the mind experiences rest, reaching a point of “atavistic regression”, a more biologically primitive, mental state. This is significant as it leads to an absence of disturbance within the mind, a point where the mind does not register discomfort or emotion of any kind. It was Dr Meares theory that in this state of profound rest, the mind’s own powers of healing can be activated. When SMT is learned correctly and practiced regularly, outcomes include less anxiety, less stress and relief of associated symptoms – including depression – leading to a more fulfilling and rewarding life.

What makes Stillness Meditation Therapy different?

The absence of a structured technique makes SMT quite unique. Physiologically based, the experience is one of global rest – meaning entire rest for body, mind and emotions. This effortlessness sets SMT apart from other types of meditation.

SMT provides consistently effective relief for all psychosomatic symptoms and if practiced regularly it brings an outcome of inner calm that flows into general life, retraining default and unconscious reactions, resulting in a calmer response to living.

Facilitated sessions bring in the added benefit of calming touch, another unique element to the experience of SMT. The meditation experience intensifies as the calming touch by the practitioner communicates to the client a sense of safety and surrender which then enables them to experience successful mental rest.

How can Stillness Meditation Therapy help me?

Anxiety, stress, depression and illness touch everyone at some point – from work and family pressures, loss, grief, lack of direction and more. SMT offers relief from the many distressing reactions that may limit one’s life.

In SMT, we allow our mind to rest, creating an absence of disturbance within the mind. In this state of profound rest, the mind’s own powers of healing can be activated. If practiced regularly SMT brings an outcome of inner calm that flows into general life, retraining default and unconscious reactions, resulting in a calmer response to living.

With symptoms relieved, one can experience a renewed sense of wellbeing and zest for life that perhaps was never been experienced before. Additional benefits include a stronger immune system, higher quality of life, increased productivity, creativity, sense of direction and a heightened sense of personal and spiritual development.

A study of 100 clients at the Stillness Meditation Therapy Centre in September 2011, revealed a 54% reduction in symptoms on completion of 16 facilitated sessions combined with regular home practice.

About Ainslie Meares

Dr Ainslie Meares BAgS, MD, BS, DPM. (1910-1986) – the founding father of Stillness Meditation Therapy, the original therapeutic meditation and the precursor to our current understanding of Mind Body Medicine.

Any discussion on Stillness Meditation Therapy would be incomplete without first acknowledging the huge debt owed by modern health care to the Melbourne psychiatrist, Dr Ainslie Meares. He was a man far ahead of his time – a pioneer in the cause of helping people to a higher quality of life.

Long before anxiety and stress were acknowledged as contributing to illness Dr Meares had identified that connection. Long before mind-body medicine was scientifically acclaimed as it is today, it was he who had emphasised the importance of that. And long before meditation was advocated as a potential source of healing, Dr Meares had established his unique concept of Stillness Meditation, offering a solution to counteract emotional and physical distress.
